What will happen to all the memories?
Today I saw footage that just recently surfaced about what was going on during WWII. The clip showed concentration camps, gas chamber, ghettos and destruction that until now I had only seen in still pictures. It is not for the weak of heart or the queasy.NOTE: approximately 50 min. long

It got me thinking....
All war survivors are at least 65 now. Our generation still has someone to tell us stories, to not let us forget? What will be in 20 years from now? Who will keep the memory alive of those lost then? Of those that suffered and survived? What will remind us of the terror that happened there?
MBD and Avraham Freid sang this beautiful song at the Ohel concert years ago. I've always loved it and was reminded of it today. I typed up the lyrics as best as I could remember; please correct me if it's wrong.
I’m a very tired old and worn out man
And my eyes have long been blind
Most things that people say to me
Just seem to slip my mind
Oh but the suffering and painful times
That were in years long gone
Are still as clear upon my memory
As the numbers on my arm
Chorus:
What will become of all the memories?
Are they to scatter with the dust in the breeze?
Who will stand before the world that wishes to deny
How will they believe in someone who never heard the cries?
When I hold my grandson close to me
And his fingers trace the patterns of my tears
He asks me “Zeide, tell me why do you cry,
what is it that you fear?”
And I tell him “There once was another child
who smelled this sweet and felt this warm
but he was taken from before my eyes
and only I remain to mourn”.
Chorus:
What will become of all the memories?
Are they to scatter with the dust in the breeze?
Who will stand before the world that wishes to deny
How will they believe in someone who never heard the cries?
There is little I can say or do to make things change
Time has a way of passing by so fast
Like a fleeting shadow, no one will recall
The faces of the past
What will become of all the memories?
Are they to scatter with the dust in the breeze?
Who will stand before the world not knowing what to say
When the very last survivor fades away, fades away
What will become of all the memories?
Are they to scatter with the dust in the breeze?
But one thought gives me comfort; it’s all that I have left
Oh, I know that god in heaven won’t forget!
This song is so beautiful. If you don't know the tune go get the Ohel Concert from about 10 years ago.
I really didn't want to post such a depressing topic, but it shook me up too much.

It is scary, even with all the multimedia proof there will be reshoim denying, how absurd it may sound,s that it happened.

This song was composed (and originally sung) by Abie Rottenberg. To this day, it remains my all time favorite Jewish song, and it is the only song that moves me to tears each and every time I hear it.

A psychologist I know works specifically with survivors. Aside from helping with the mental anguish, he works to get their stories recorded and their pictures taken. There's also the International Network of Children of Jewish Survivors, to make sure that the Holocaust will not be forgotten.
It's also important for each of us to teach our children, and to take them to Holocaust museums (when age-appropriate).

steven spielberg started a thing where he videotapes survivors telling their stories so there will be proof when there is no longer anyone to tell the stories... I am sure this org. can be found on google.

Heimish, well congrats!
Prag, I didn't want to include that topic at all simply because it angers me, but very true. It's mind-boggling how it can be denied.
Nuch, we should be zochah soon!
IAGN, I don't think I've ever heard Abie sing that; would love to though. This might just be my favorite song too.
IFT, you mean download the clip from tsofar.com? I don't really know. Can anyone help with that?
R-I-T, God bless them! I agree, children should be taken to see what happened. They might not realize how recent it happened though...
JBF, I feel quite honored by your visit to my blog. A search for 'The Couple' on my Netflix account revealed:
The Odd Couple
The Odd Couple II
The Aryan Couple
A Perfect Couple
Loving Couple
So which one of these do I need to add? Were you sick to your stomach? That bad? I'm having second thoughts...
Megapixel, he did produce 'Schindler's List', a movie about Oskar Schindler, a hero that saved thousands of lives. He is also producing a movie called 'Spell Your Name': Survivors tell the story of the Babi Yar massacre from WWII, where some 100,000 people were massacred by German forces. Is this what you mean?

This song will help our memories survive in itself. I don't think the song will be forgotten.
Moving post.

JBF, it must be 'The Aryan Couple' because Martin Landau is in that movie and it's about WWII. So I will move it up in my Queue and will let all of you know how I liked it.
Shpitzle, you're right! The song itself won't let us forget. Welcome Back!

I have the tape in my car, my kids dont like slow songs. I listen to it when I'm alone and tears form on their own.
Ive been to Theresenstat years back with my grandmother, we walked up to the door of the crematorium and she stopped in the doorway and she looks up me with tears and says "you can still smell them, cant you smell it?"
I stopped and sniffed, sure enough there was a decay smell in the room, very faint but it was there.
People see what they wanna see and hear what they wanna hear, and they believe what they WANNA believe.
It's not worth the time spent trying to convince someone of something they dont wanna know.

JBF, I guess it will be a while until I see that movie because the release date is unknown at Netflix.
1Beautiful-Stranger, you're welcome.
Yingerman, So your grandmother went back? Wow! I would think it would be too much to handle for them. So this is what you listen to when your kids aren't there? Not bad.

Wow! Unbelieveable. thats a fantastic song - thanks for typing up the lyrics. i was looking all over for them.
As i was following along the words, i noticed that the lyrics of each chorus were just a bit off. below are the corrections. (i only wrote the lines of the chorus that needed corrections.)
thanks again!
Chorus #1:
What will become.....
Who will stand before the world knowing what to say,
When the very last survivor fades away?
Chorus #2:
What will....
Who will stand before the world that NOW wishes to deny
How will they believe in someone who never heard the cries?
Chorus #3:
What will become...
But one thought gives me comfort; it's all that I have left
Oh, I know that god in heaven won't forget!
(the last chorus was not repeated on the video)
